Lanark County marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Lanark County councillors and staff gathered on Wednesday for a flag raising to mark the upcoming National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
"Today we gather to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which will take place on Monday, September 30," said Warden Steve Fournier (Drummond/North Elmsley Reeve). "As we raise this flag, we remember the countless Indigenous lives affected by the legacy of residential schools. This day is a solemn reminder of the importance of acknowledging our past, fostering understanding and building a future rooted in respect and healing."
The creation of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in 2021 is one of the 94 Calls to Action released by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. It builds on Orange Shirt Day, which was an Indigenous-led, grassroots commemorative day to raise awareness and promote the concept of "Every Child Matters." Public commemoration honours children who never came home from residential schools, along with their families, communities and the lasting impacts from the institutions.
"Let this flag symbolize our commitment to truth, reconciliation and the ongoing journey toward justice," Fournier said. "Together, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities, listening, learning and advocating for change."
