Lanark County responding to storm situation
Lanark County’s social services and public works departments are working along with the CAO’s office to coordinate the response to the severe storm that ravaged communities on Saturday.
Many communities and rural areas in the county are still without power and are continuing to assess the significant damage from the storm.
Key efforts being undertaken by Lanark County include:
- Food security: Lanark County Social Services is working with the Town of Carleton Place by assisting with transportation to neighbouring grocery stores and by providing additional financial assistance as necessary. Social services staff are on hand at the Carleton Place arena on Tuesday until 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Roads: Public works staff have been working to clear roads of dangerous brush and debris throughout the county. All county roads are open, but staff will be cleaning up roadside trees for the next two weeks, so please drive with caution.
- Sharing communication: The county is sharing social media information that has been posted by local municipalities regarding the availability of water refill stations, charging depots, landfill hours and instructions for yard waste/debris, additional accommodations for food waste and garbage collection, and more. Please check with your local municipality for specific information for your community.
“In difficult times we as a county always come together as one community to reach out and help those who need assistance,” said Lanark County Warden John Fenik (Perth Mayor). “The aftermath of this storm presents concerning challenges, but we will meet these challenges head on. I want to thank residents for assisting their neighbours in this time of need, and to encourage everyone to continue to look out for one another until services are restored.”
Residents are encouraged to be patient as many people without power or running water visit neighbouring communities to get provisions such as ice, food and gasoline.
“This is an unprecedented storm that has caused severe damage throughout many parts of Lanark County and Ontario,” added CAO Kurt Greaves. “Municipal staff at all levels, as well as Hydro One and utilities services from other provinces and the United States are doing their best to restore power and safe travel quickly, but it’s going to take some time.”
