Here are the highlights from the Lanark County Council meeting held Feb. 14, 2024.

County to Assist Smiths Falls with Climate Action Planning: Lanark County Council has approved a by-law to enter into a shared-services intermunicipal agreement with the Town of Smiths Falls to provide technical and administrative support to the town’s climate action initiatives.

At the public works committee meeting last month, Clerk Jasmin Ralph explained the agreement would enable the county to provide expertise and assistance to the town in a more formal way as Smiths Falls embarks upon developing its Climate Action Plan. The county adopted a plan in 2023 that outlines both corporate and community targets and activities aimed to address the climate change crisis.

The agreement outlines compensation and terms of assistance the county will provide, such as technical and administrative support in completing milestones, council reports, meetings, public consultations and development of the plan itself. The agreement spans 18 months and the compensation will cover staff costs, travel and incidentals such as courier costs and office supplies. The town approved the agreement at its committee of the whole meeting.

“This agreement will have a positive impact on the climate and sustainability for the county by supporting the development and adoption of another Climate Action Plan for the community and municipal organization,” Ralph said.
